Issue:
Following update of vCenter / VCSA from 6.5 to 6.5 Update 1, or the newly patched ESXi 6.5 hosts, the legacy Windows client can no longer access the vCenter.
A error message is displayed saying:
The required client support files need to be retrieved from the server "0.0.0.0" and installed. Click Run the installer or Save the installer.

Resolution:
None.

The error message isn't helpful and accurate for the reason. The reason is that with 6.5 Update 1, the client is no longer compatible or supported from VMware.
If you are running legacy plugins to the MS Windows vSphere client, you need to run the plugin programs directly rather than from the vSphere client.

The VMware ESXi 6.5 Update 1 Release Notes include a paragraph saying that:
"The desktop vSphere Client was deprecated in vSphere 6.5 and is no longer supported. When you try to connect to an ESXi 6.5 host, the following warning message appears..." along with the message above.

We have to use the web client only from 6.5 U1 forward.
