These instructions will give you the steps to export a Blender animation so that it can be used w/a live action sequence.
Note:
If you want black to be opaque, then have a white background. If you want white to be opaque, then choose a black background.
The instructions also assume you are using the Cycles rendering engine in Blender.
Blender:
1. Ensure your animation has the correct background color (e.g. white for no invert when importing into Avid Media Composer).
2. Check the Cycle Output and confirm it is RGBA (should already be that).
3. Next, go to the Film pull-down and check the Transparent option.
4. Set the file format to PNG. (Both PNG and JPEG-2000 have an alpha channel specification.)
Note:
If you are on Mac you can import import the images into Quicktime Pro and also export a MOV file with the PNG codec with an Alpha channel. Then you can import the MOV file into After Effects or Avid Media Composer.
Media Composer:
1. In the SuperBin window, right-click and choose "Import...".
2. In the file selection dialog, navigate to the image folder, do a Select-All to select all image files.
3. Still in the file Select Files to Import dialog, click the Options button in the lower corner, to open the Import Settings pop-up dialog.
4. In the Import Settings pop-up, choose the Alpha Channel (white = opaque, black=opaque), click the checkbox Autodetect Sequentially - Numbered Files. Click OK.
5. Click the Open button back in the file selection dialog. Media composer will not create a single video file from the images and add it to the bin.
6. Double click the video file to display it. Click the Play button to verify it works.
