Notes for Using Serial Console with ShoreGear Switch

1. Connect Serial Cable
Note: USB to Serial probably won't work, didn't for me. Used workstation with old Serial port and access worked fine with settings below.
2a. Set HyperTerminal to:
Bits/Sec: 19200,
Data Bits: 8
Parity: None
Stop Bits: 1
Flow Control: None

2b. Make sure that:
AutoDetect for terminal type is set
Carriage returns and local echo are both off.

3. Once connected, click Enter once to display login prompt.
Assuming default username and password, enter:
login: anonymous
password: ShoreTel

4. Enter desired menu commands:
example:
Enter ? to display current menu.
example:
To update network, select 3 from main menu.
Update the IP address, network mask, and gateway.
example:
To view configuration, select 2 from the main menu.

5. After you make changes, select 0 to return to the main menu.
(The system will print various lines of text as it saves the change.)

6. I typically reboot after system says it saved.
This is done on the main menu.

__________________________

When you boot, you can choose to abort the ShoreTel CLI boot and stay the O/S VxWorks console.
If you do accidentally, either Reboot again (pull plug), or use the cliStart command.

To get to the VxWorks console on purpose from the ShoreTel CLI, type: gotoshell.

Note: The ShoreGear-50V is completely different.
It's based on BusyBox, a small Linux distro.

ShoreGear-50V root login:
login: root
password: ShoreTel

To get to the STCLI (ShoreTel Command Line Interface):
#su admin

Setup Notes:
If you set a static IP for the switch, you also need to set DHCP to disabled first. Otherwise, upon boot, you'll be back to DHCP.
So set DHCP first, Then set the IP, Gateway, and DNS servers (Primary and Secondary).

The manual warns about running the V switch w/o the ShoreTel Director server if NTP is not enabled. Therefore, we also set the NTP server to our Firewall which does NTP.
